Is it acceptable to put a cut end of a pressure treated post into the ground?

Answer:

Only the original factory ends of posts should be put into the ground to insure longest life. The preservative will penetrate nearly all of the sap wood (outer part of the tree), but will not always penetrate the darker central heartwood core. Even when using “ground contact” preservative treated lumber it is recommended that all cut ends coming in contact with the ground or masonry surfaces be coated with a topical preservative. It is advisable to coat all cut surfaces of treated lumber as well.
