The American Cedar & Millwork, Inc. family of companies was founded in 1984 by Michael and Julie Neal.  The first store, Delaware Cedar Company, was located in Lewes, Delaware.  At its inception, the company mission was to offer customers the highest quality building materials complimented by a dedication to superior customer service.

Over twenty years later, that philosophy remains the driving force behind the company that has now grown to include seven locations.  The American Cedar & Millwork Companies presently has locations in Lewes, Delaware; Millersville, Maryland; Madison, Virginia; Raleigh and Greensboro, North Carolina; and Coastal Coatings, Inc. located in Dover, Delaware.  The company's product line has also expanded to include cedar, redwood, hardwoods, roofing materials, doors, windows, hardware, custom mouldings, and other related millwork items, in addition to the services of a pre-staining operation and custom millshop.

The American Cedar & Millwork corporate office is located in Lewes, Delaware, where the company was originally founded in 1984.  This location houses an average of $1.5 million in inventory.  Delaware is also the home to Coastal Coatings, a pre-staining operation founding in 1988, and located in Dover, Delaware.  Coastal Coatings machine primes and/or finishes raw wood and nails prior to the materials being delivered to the job site, thus saving customers time and money versus traditional methods of staining or finishing onsite.

A second location, The Cedar Company, was added in 1986 in Grasonville, Maryland.  In 1997, that store was relocated to Millersville, Maryland, and merged with another company, Scott Jay Cedar & Millwork.  This location specializes in custom door and window packages, as well as proudly offering our customers one of the finest custom millshops in the area.

The Madison, Virginia location joined in 1995.  It stocks a complete line of cedar products, in addition to offering fine quality pre-staining and millwork to the Virginia market, and services both Virginia and West Virginia.

In 2002, all locations adopted the common name of American Cedar & Millwork, Inc.  The purpose of this transition was to encourage continuity and name recognition for customers and vendors alike. 

The most recent addition to our family came in May, 2006 with the acquisition of Brooks Building Products in Raleigh and Greensboro, North Carolina.  Brooks has a long reputation of quality and service in the Carolina region, and offers a full line of products including treated lumber, windows and doors, millwork and heavy timber systems.
